About Oxford

Oxford, the city of dreaming spires, is one of the oldest cities in England. Founded in the 13th century, its name is derived from its position on the Thames where oxen were able to ford the river. In a recent survey, UK business people voted Oxford as "the most desirable UK city in which to live”. Also, the Channel 4 programme Location, Location, Location found Oxford the best city for buy-to-let investment in 2006.

The University forms the heart of the city and the area has an unparalleled collection of historic buildings including, for example, the Ashmolean Museum on Beaumont Street, which is the oldest public museum in the country. The University itself actually comprises 39 colleges and the first, University College, was endowed in 1249.

In addition to the University, Oxford is also home to many internationally renowned hospitals, including the John Radcliffe, well-known companies such as BMW Mini, and major science and business parks.

Oxford is extremely well located, with excellent communication links to London, Birmingham and many of the larger airports. Equally accessible is some of the most beautiful countryside in England, with Blenheim Palace and the Cotswolds to the north west of the city, and the Berkshire Downs to the south.

The large transient population has always contributed to a liquid housing market in Oxford, which is underpinned by a high level of owner-occupation. Therefore, the main reason behind the continued success of the sales and lettings markets in Oxford can simply be attributed to the short supply and excess demand.
