About Oxfordshire

Oxford, a great city of dreaming spires renowned for its University and vibrant culture. Its name derives from ‘Oxenford’, when oxen would cross the shallow River Thames.

There have been settlements in or around Oxford since 3000BC, although when the first people settled by the River Thames that gave the city its name, is unknown.

Today, Oxford draws in 26,000 commuters to the city and an additional estimated 9.3 million tourists each year. With approximately 21% of the housing in the private rented sector, 10% higher than the UK average, the fabric of Oxford life keeps the lettings market strong.

There are over 31,000 full time students in Oxford. The University and its 38 colleges form the heart of the city, with the streets between the High Street and Broad Street housing landmarks such as the Bodleian Library, the magnificent Radcliffe Camera and Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre.

Oxford has also established a reputation for innovation in science and technology with business parks in East Oxford, and its hospitals in Headington are pioneering the way forward in medicine.

With many beautiful parks within the city, such as the picturesque Christ Church Meadow and University Parks, Oxford offers peace and quiet within its hustle and bustle. Historic Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, the Cotswolds to the northwest and the Berkshire Downs to the south are also within easy reach.

Oxford is located approximately 50 miles northwest of London and has rail and motorway links to both the north and south of the country.
